Sefalaljia - Stewart James Haunted Cabinet El Tab's Sefalaljia A Proper Kit of Props for Stewart James' 1939 Spirit Cabinet Routine July 31, 2009 - Stewart James 1939 version calls for a Dumuth Milk Bottle to be used in the 5th act of the Sefalaljia play. For the past few days I have been trying to find some Dumuth bottles on the internet and my old friends in Magic to no avail but what I've found out is that the Dumuth Milk Bottle will not actually fit in James cabinet which makes me wonder how he performed it, 'probably with the lid open,' according to Pete Biro. IMO the quart sized Demuth bottle is way too big. Anyway, here's what I've done and I think James would agree, that the smaller half-pint milk bottle viaually is better in the cabinet. Demuth only manufactured the much larger size, that's why he had to use it. I've taken a 5.75' high half-pint milk bottle from the antique store in the village up the road (don't worry, he has more) and gimmicked it in a similar way to Dumuth's bottle which is the forrunner to the Milk Pitcher and the Wonder Glass. The half-pint bottle fits the cabinet perfectly and will look beautiful inside.
When the flex top straw is pushed into the bottle it releases the 'milk' and it looks like the spirit enjoys a half pint of milk. This is exciting stuff. It perfectly follows the spirit of James routine. August 1, 2009 - The milk bottle is working perfectly and is easy to use. I expect to offer the milk bottle separately for around $45.
I have located a nice source for the Annemann book. I have to pick up a few cigars to try my idea using not only the chemical mix that James used but what I think will be a more stunning version using the chemical stew. The props supplied with this Sefalaljia cabinet follow the routine from The Jinx #69. A pdf file of the issue is available for reading. The price for the kit is yet to be determined and will probably be offered in two versions eventually and a kit of the props for those who already have a cabinet or want to make one with the information supplied.
I'm proud to offer my version of the cabinet though and think it will go down with the Chest O' Destiny and the Tabman Tables as classics. 69 12/2/1939 August 2, 2009 - Normally I take Sundays off but I've been playing with this all day today.
One of the things that I never liked about James' original 1939 routine was the use of the skull on the cabinet. The skull, or something similar, is necessary to facilitate the spirit placing a red rubber ball in an empty glass but I've been wracking my brain on this one.
I finally came up with the solution and it makes perfect sense and adds a logical bent to the smoking cigar routine at position #4. In a few weeks I'll be shooting a video of the entire routine so you can see what I'm talking about. August 3, 2009 - I spent the day working on ideas using a candlestick holder in place of the skull. It's one of those antique ones with the dish around the bottom and a finger hold for carrying. It just makes sense to me to use it. A pack of matches is in the dish.
Wearing a black shirt, it looks good from just a few feet away using a black thread attached to the candlestick's base. Now I need to find some like this. Actual antiques or maybe some from the 30s which is the era of the one I'm using now. I just had a thought.
I wonder if Demuth made a beer bottle. Most spirits I know would rather have beer than milk. Beer with a straw? Maybe a quart of C45? Now Im wondering if it's possible to cut the bottom off a beer bottle using the same setup Scotty York taught me for cutting up glass light bulbs.
I'll just have to try it and I will need some major face protection for this - but now I will just have to try it. August 4, 2009 - In an effect like this, the mundane is just as important as the fun and flashy stuff. For example, I spent this day cruising junk shops and roadside flea markets for mint milk bottles to modify for the kit. They're harder to find than you'd think. Also, I want to find a supply of the cardboard pull tab stoppers that I need to complete the bottle. I imagine pulling the top off and then inserting the straw.
I want to send each kit and bottle out with at least a few spare stoppers. And I want this kit to be total and complete for doing the 1939 Sefalaljia routine from The Jinx #69. August 5, 2009 - You can read the entire routine and the way it works if you click on the picture of The Jinx #69 above. Quantic Tropical Funk Experience Rar more. The short take on it is this: • The ball in the glass • The knot in the handkerchief • The ring on the rope • The smoking cigar • The drinking of the milk Each 'act' is complete and the starting point for Stewart James' Sefalaljia. Oh, by the way. This is going to be fun. Thanks for following my progress.
If you think you might be interested in a kit for yourself. August 6, 2009 - Now I have to put a new, very small shop together.
When I sold Tabman USA that included all the tools that Ray wanted to take to his shop but I have three five gallon buckets of the small tools, planes, burnishers, shears, knives, rasps, files, clamps, and other small tools accumulated over a lifetime of building. Ray wanted the big stuff like the drill press, saws, lathes and router tables but said he had his own collection of a lifetime of small tools.
Actually this is a great time to buy shop tools with their built in lasers for accuracy; and relatively cheap too. Even the big U. Serial Number Fraps 3 5 999. S. Manufacturers like Skil and DeWalt are having their tools made offshore. Pete Biro has inspired me to get going again and reminded me that I was The Tab or 'El Tab.' Pete, himself, is setting up a shop at his digs in California not all that far from where Floyd Thayer had his shop relatively speaking. Pete is setting up to make his 'No Tilt Chinese Sticks' and other items from a lifetime of Magic and helping other Magic craftsmen like me, Dean Dill and Joe Porper.
I'm happy to be part of Pete's team. I hope nobody is in a big rush. I want to build the cabinets myself and have Gloria sew the canvas and Mali cloth on her Grandmother's sewing machine like we did in the old days but she's balking at using the old machine. Some things do change, and for the better too. August 7, 2009 - It has been so hot here in the south today but I never minded the heat too much as long as I can get out of the sun. What I'm thinking is that I might make two runs of a half dozen each. Out of the first half dozen, four sets have been spoken for.
Today I've spent in searching out ideas for converting part of my ramshackled barn into the new El Tab Shop. I'm excited about it.
I should start putting the sets together in a few weeks and hopefly have them available by October. Let me know!! Jamy Ian Swiss has put me in touch with Allan Slaight, the editor of my favorite James book, so he is now watching the progress here and reader, Doc Newman pointed me in the direction of a tool that just might lop the bottom off a beer bottle enabling the manufacture of a self drinking one of those as mentioned above.
Thanks Jamy and Doc. August 8,9, 2009 - Even though it is the weekend and I spent some time away from Magic for a few hours, I did manage to get in more reading in the first big James book; chapters that I have previously ignored. I was pleased to read of James experiences in the Canadian military during WW2. I have a deep love for that generation of people and finding out more about James work and Magic, yes Magic, during this terrible time made me even prouder to be associated with him even though the association is across the years and many miles. I was born in late 1945, almost six years after Sefalaljia was first published by Ted Annemann in The Jinx.
You might also be interested to learn that I enjoyed a close association with Max Abrams who put the big Annemann book together and inherited the bullet catch footage from him when he passed away. Magic has a way of doing that to those who remain true. Tomorrow is Monday, and a new day. I can't wait to see how it unfolds.
August 11, 2009 - I'm headed to Atlanta to work in the PyroShot shop for two days. Of course, during this venture, I will be experimenting and testing the self smoking cigar!!! Back on the 13th. August 13, 2009 - There should be a video on the site in the next few days of the self smoking cigar if all goes well.
And I'm seeing that this web page is getting a little long (winded) and I might have to break it up into multiple pages soon. August 15, 2009 - I will be supplying everything you need to do the original routine with the exception of the two chemicals that you need for the self lighting cigar but I'll tell you what you need and they are common substances esity and cheaply obtained. Today, I bought an assortment of cigars. Tomorrow I plan to shoot a short video demonstrating the self smoking cigar. I should have it online here by Monday if all goes well. Also thank you to Tom Stone who emailed me his ebook Sleapless which has some excellent ideas about Sefalaljia which has been a long time interest of his. Thank you Tom.
Also, Pete Biro found a great source for real glass milk bottles and pointed me in that direction. The list is growing bigger, thank you for your interest. August 16, 2009 - Looking at the video you can see that the 'tobacco' fell out of the end of the cigar when I put it in the ashtray. Tomorrow I'm gonna mix it with some super glue. The smoke and the flare are awesome and it actually lights the cigar. The smoke you smell isn't generated by amonia fumes like in the original version, it smells like cigar tobacco. I think if a kitchen match is laid in the ashtray in front of the cigar the flare will fire the match and make the illusion even better.
I'll get some better video by Tuesday. I shot this today with my Flip with the ashtray sitting on a fence post.
The next video should tell the tale but I wanted to share this with you. It's easy to gimmick the cigar and return it to its wrapper, I just need a little glue to hold the tobacco at the tip. It's there to hold the special 'tobacco' in. This is gonna be good.
August 17, 2009 - Today has brought several emails about Sefalaljia suggesting a gaffed box and wanting a return to the skull. Jim Riser is concerned about the fire aspect of the cigar as is Richard Hart. Richard also sent me a great email from his notebook about the effects. I think I might ask him if we can include his ideas in the Sefalaljia book that will accompany the kit. The kit incidently will include everything you will need to do the original routine. I will try to find a source for some skulls for Richard and to reassure Jim and Richard, I plan to include several methods to accomplish the self smoking cigar including a copy of The Jinx #69 with Stewart James' original routine.
You'll be able to do it right out of the box. It will include absolutely everything much like and inspired by the Busby kit for Sefalaljia. Also in the works is a different Sefalaljia box that will be a little different from Stewart James's radio cabinet design but gaffed to include the linking ropes from James later work. You'll also be able to do the Love-sick Tennis Ball using a small rubber football very much like Busby's box. I like the Sefalaljia ideas and I like Stewart James. I should have gone to Canada to meet him when I had the chance.
Just to keep things straight. What I am offering is a kit of all props to do Stewart James Original 1939 Routine with noted exceptions.
I want to remain true to the 1939 routine and thinking; a tribute to Stewart James. August 18, 2009 - Today I halved the amount of potassium permanganate, hereafter referred to as 'PP' to about 1 gram but that's still too much. The glue worked great. I think if you did the cigar scene with the curtain closed and with your back to the cabinet you could play it for comedy. The smoke would come boiling out of the openings on the cabinet after about 20 seconds of wait and the exciting part is that the cigar is beautifully lit and has a nice ash on it. It is dangerous and would take care and a responsible person doing it. And no, there's no flash paper involved..
Not shown on the video is the 20 second wait and you can tell I was playing with Window's MovieMaker. Tomorrow I will try a half gram of PP. I've got two cigars left from the five pack. It would be one thing if I smoked.
I'm also using glycol as the reagent in this experiment. Gylcol is poisonous and can cause death if ingested so don't drink it and by reading this you agree not to.
Who said Magic wasn't dangerous? A video of the milk bottle in action. I have the materials to build a dozen boxes ordered and I have a nice stock of Mali cloth left over from the old days.
Jim Riser also suggested turning the candlesticks out of wood on a wood lathe. That's a good idea and I just found a great source of fake skulls for those who want a skull instead of the candle. And here's a thought. A skull candle holder. That might be the idea solution but it's your call. I think for my personal routine I will use the candlestick because it's so logical to light the candle and when you lift it to blow it out you've done the move to drop the red rubber ball in the glass. I'm looking forward to doing some video of the entire routine probably in a few weeks.
Did I say I hope you're patient? This page is getting pretty large. I may lay low for a few days and try to organize this a little better.
August 21, 2009 - I think I have all the details worked out and plan to have 3 sets ready in about three weeks. Then I can do three sets a week after that. I have 10 sets tenatively spoken for and I plan to keep a set up for myself this time. So don't look for me posting every day but I will chime in a couple of times before the sets are ready.
I will shoot a video of everything at that time and post it. El Tab's Sefalaljia Kit Thanks again for your support both now and over the years many of you friends and customers over almost three decades. © 2009 Tabby Crabb aka The Tabman.
